WHO PAYS? Toxic Water, Rising Health Costs, and the Price of Water in the West
This week on Western Water Weekly, we break down some of the most unsettling water stories in the West — and why they matter to families, cities, and rural communities alike.
New research links “forever chemicals” in drinking water to higher infant mortality and severe birth complications, raising urgent questions about long-term contamination that still lingers in groundwater across the United States. At the same time, a new analysis reveals stark inequalities in Colorado River water pricing, where cities often pay hundreds of dollars per acre-foot while some agricultural districts pay little or nothing for the water itself.
We also head to the U.S.–Mexico border, where yet another sewage spill sent untreated wastewater toward Southern California beaches, renewing frustration among residents who have lived with odors, closures, and health concerns for decades.
And finally, we look at a growing paradox across the West: a “snow drought.” Even as rain falls, warmer temperatures are turning snowfall into runoff — threatening the natural snowpack that supplies rivers and reservoirs throughout the year.
From water quality and public health to drought, pricing, and long-term sustainability, these stories reveal how deeply water policy affects everyday life across the West.
