Using Google Forms for automatically checked tests- Advanced Features
This video tutorial is a step by step guide to using Google Forms. If you have a Google account then this is a set of videos, taking you from the basic settings and creating it to create tests and quizzes in language teaching. This is a great video for anyone wanting to do formative tests or quizzes that are automatically corrected by Google. You can turn Google Forms into a test by choosing the Quiz button and then making questions where you provide the answers and the feedback. You can use this for ANY subject but in my example I am doing it for language learning.

In this tutorial you can watch how quizzes for formative tests can be built around YouTube videos. If you want to check learners’ understanding, you can do that with Google Forms. What this video covers is how to access Google Forms, how to create a test or quiz around a YouTube video. It also shows you how to share the test or quiz. You will see how this looks from the students’ point of view as well as how to look at the results at the end.

This is potentially useful for any teachers who are having to teach online at the moment. If you are now engaged in online delivery, then Google Forms can be used to set a test which can have feedback on. If you are using a flipped or blended learning delivery, then a lot of this kind of activity or task is needed to get general understanding of your learners’ ability. Flipped learning places the tasks which require the lower order thinking skills in a task that learners do in their own time. The higher order thinking skills can be done in a virtual classroom environment.

Students do not need a Gmail account in order to do a quiz. In apps, the teacher needs to look in their Google Drive for the app which is called Google Forms. We can create the test or quiz with a video embedded in it, with a link, so that the students can actually do the test. Watch Russell as he creates a form in order to share with his learners.

In settings there are many options for the online teacher. Teaching online often requires a teacher to create a quiz for their learners to complete asynchronously. Students will watch the video on YouTube via the link and then can get tested by using the Google Form. Adding a video is easily done in Google Forms, because YouTube and Google are already linked. So a search for either general or specific videos will bring up a thumbnail image of the video. One tip about embedding video is shown in this tutorial You can enlarge the screen size of any YouTube videos. Add instructions and build up a quiz in this way. You need to make it clear that students are to watch a YouTube video and then answer questions based on it. Adding questions in Google Forms takes a bit of time, but if you do this methodically, as in this example, adding options, then you can soon build up your test.

To share a Google Form based test you need to send, but there are different choices. One option is to send the test by email. If this is not possible, you can share a link. This is common with sharing Google documents and sheets. In Forms, you can share a link to the test. If you are using Edmodo, as Russell does, then you can shorten the link and share it into your virtual learning environment. Otherwise, just send the link in another way to your students. In Google Forms, like Google Doc, this is fairly straightforward. Google Forms is an educational technology with a simple display and design. This tutorial takes you through all of the basic steps you need to do in order to create a test or quiz and send it to your students.

Russell Stannard runs the educational technology website - Teacher Training Videos. This is one of hundreds of free teacher training videos, many of which apply to non teachers as much as teachers. He offers these videos for free via this YouTube channel and his website - teachertrainingvideos.com. This tutorial lasts 17 minutes but within that time, Russell, shows you clearly how to work with Google Forms. Search for more training videos by using the search tool at the top of the page.
