We demonstrate how to thoroughly flush and clean a Suburban brand RV water heater. Last year, since we had already flushed our water heater for the season, we borrowed a friend's RV to demonstrate how to flush an Atwood brand water heater:

Although we did talk about the primary difference between the two brands (Suburbans have an anode rod and Atwoods don't), we wanted to show the actual flushing of a Suburban unit.

We also wanted to go into more detail about the aftermarket anode rod we've been using for the past two years, and talk about why we've decided try going back to an OEM rod this year.

This video will explain our decision process, basically choosing between the lesser of two evils: the possibility of not properly protecting our steel heater tank from corrosion, or the possibility of being unable to remove the anode next year.

The first time we tried to remove the original factory anode rod, it was so badly rusted into place that we broke a wrench trying to unscrew it, even with liberal use of Liquid Wrench. The problem with the factory rod is that the threads are steel. Since the tank threads are also steel, they rust together. We were concerned that they might rust so badly, that we could break the fitting on the tank trying to remove it, which should be done annually.

What's best — a magnesium rod with a steel base, or a zinc & aluminum rod in a brass base with brass outer collar? Do both types sacrifice themselves enough to do the job? We discuss the entire decision process in the video, and of course we'll provide an update again next spring about how things worked out.

UPDATE! THE ANODE ROD VERDICT IS IN! SEE IT HERE:

Rust, lime scale and other debris can build up in the hot water tank on your motorhome, travel trailer or 5th wheel. Left alone, this can shorten the useful life of your water heater. Simple annual maintenance and care of your RV's hot water system will save you money by extending the life of the heater.

The small amount of time required to do this simple but essential maintenance will pay for itself with years of extra service from your RV's hot water heater.
