Kyphoplasty & Vertebroplasty Risks

Some of the risks of having kyphoplasty or vertebroplasty procedure are infection, bleeding, increased back pain, nerve damage and cement leaking out of position. Dr. Justin Sporrer, Neurosurgeon at Baptist Health Neuroscience Center, says the risks are very low, but those would include bleeding outside of the spine or inside of the spine.

He says another risk would be leakage of cement into the blood vessels, which can go up to the heart and the lungs. "Exceedingly rare. I've never seen these complications personally, except when somebody has had the procedure done elsewhere, unfortunately, and then they present to our emergency department and we take the best care of them that we can," he highlights.
