🏛️ What Is Local Administration?
Local administration refers to the governance of cities, towns, and villages by institutions that operate closest to the people. These bodies are responsible for managing public services, infrastructure, and development at the grassroots level. In India, local administration is divided into:
Urban Local Bodies (ULBs): Municipal Corporations, Municipal Councils, Nagar Panchayats
Rural Local Bodies: Gram Panchayats, Panchayat Samitis, Zila Parishads
These institutions were empowered through the 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendments, which aimed to decentralize governance and promote participatory democracy
Types of Urban Local Bodies
India’s urban areas are governed by three main types of local bodies:

Nagar Panchayat Small towns Chairperson
Municipal Council Medium-sized cities President
Municipal Corporation Large cities (e.g., Delhi, Mumbai) Mayor
🧑💼 Key Roles and Responsibilities
Ward Councillor: Elected representative of a ward (a city subdivision). Listens to public issues and helps solve them.
Municipal Commissioner: Appointed official who implements decisions made by councillors.
Committees of Councillors: Groups that make decisions on city-wide issues like sanitation, roads, and water supply.
🧹 What Urban Bodies Do
Maintain roads, parks, and street lights
Collect and dispose of garbage
Supply clean drinking water
Run schools and hospitals
Collect taxes (property, water, entertainment)
🧾 How They Earn Money
Urban local bodies collect money through:
Property tax
Water tax
Entertainment tax
Grants from state and central governments
