"Beyond the Palisade : Life in 17th Century Henrico" Virginia History Documentary

Taking you back to the 1611 'Citie of Henricus', the birthplace of Henrico & Chesterfield County, Virginia. Henricus - named for Prince Henry, the eldest son of King James 1 - was the third permanent English colony in the New World (after Jamestown and Bermuda )and founded 9 years before Plymouth. This is where the first hospital in the New World was founded, along with the first center for higher learning and where Pocahontas was educated, converted to Christianity and where she and John Rolfe lived after marriage in 1614.

This short documentary examines who the colonists were, why they came here, what they hoped to achieve, and what difficulties they faced. Costumed interpreters and colonial experts tell a vivid, gritty tale of adventure, adversity and perseverance.
