A UK #1 for The Searchers which perfectly exemplifies what I have always maintained about this great Sixties band: their success lay chiefly in their ability to spot a hit song (usually from the US charts) and improve on it. The Drifters recorded this one in the USA, backed by Doc Pomus on piano and with Cissy Houston, Dionne Warwick, Dee Dee Warwick and Doris Troy providing backing vocals. Despite that immense array of talent, The Searchers made this one their own. An extra little factoid for you: it was after the Drifters that all four backing ladies went on to have their own solo hits.
