Willkommen in Matala
Matala ist ein kleines Dorf im Süden der griechischen Insel Kreta, das ihr nach einer knapp 1,5-stündigen Fahrt von der Inselhauptstadt Iraklio aus erreicht.
Die Hippiehöhlen sind wohl die bekannteste Sehenswürdigkeit in Matala. Sie sind übrigens nicht erst in den 60er Jahren entstanden, sondern schon sehr viel früher. Bereits in der Steinzeit wurden hier Höhlen in Stein geschlagen.
Die fantastische Aussicht und das Meer vor der Tür waren bestimmt weitere schlagende Argumente für die Besiedlung der Höhlen. Wenn man sich nun noch vorstellt, dass sogar bekannte Musiker wie Bob Dylan in den Höhlen gehaust haben, wird schnell klar, dass Matala damals ein ganz besonderer Ort gewesen sein muss.
Welcome to Matala

Matala is a small village in the south of the Greek island of Crete, which you can reach after a 1.5-hour drive from the island's capital, Heraklion.
The hippie caves are probably the most famous sight in Matala. By the way, they didn't just emerge in the 1960s, but much earlier. Caves were carved in stone here as early as the Stone Age.
The fantastic view and the sea in front of the door were certainly further convincing arguments for the settlement of the caves. If you now imagine that even famous musicians like Bob Dylan lived in the caves, it quickly becomes clear that Matala must have been a very special place back then.
