What’s Really the Difference Between a Coating, a Wax & a Sealant? – Shop Talk

In this Shop Talk episode Mike Stoops – Global Training Specialist, Derik Bemis – owner and operator of Detail Werks, and Markus Kleis – Global Product Manager all sit down and tackle the question what’s the difference between a coating, a wax and a polymer sealant?
There are carnauba waxes, synthetic waxes or sealants, we even have a Hybrid Ceramic Wax. These are all different products, so what do we mean by the term wax? All waxes are formulated to protect the paint.

Our traditional Cleaner Wax, M26 Hi Tech Yellow Wax and Gold Class Wax all use carnauba wax as the protection for the paint. For decades, carnauba wax was used because carnauba is the hardest, naturally occurring wax there is. As technology evolved Meguiar’s developed synthetic waxes like NXT Generation Tech Wax 2.0, Ultimate Liquid Wax and Ultimate Paste Wax. These basically mimic what carnauba waxes do, but they are a fully synthetic wax, or fully man-made. Technology advanced again and now there’s SiO2 – Silicon Dioxide based products like Hybrid Ceramic Liquid Wax and Hybrid Ceramic Spray Wax.

Customer preference is partially why all these different products continue to coexist and why each has their own following.

Some like the “old school” look of a carnauba wax. Others have been using a product for a long time, they like the results the product gives them, and they are comfortable with it. Another factor in all of this is that car owners often have an emotional attachment to their cars. This can sway owners to want to stay true to the heritage of the car or continue to use match the product with the paint of the time period.

We often get asked “what is your best wax?”. That answer is going to vary depending on the person. The best wax is what is most important to each individual customer and what they prefer. Some of the things people want out of a wax include how much gloss or shine it delivers, the type of gloss, the durability, the ease of application and removal, and water beading action. Ultimately, the best wax for each of us depends on what we want and what we need.

What separates these waxes from protectants? Ultimately, it’s opinion and there is no right or wrong answer. Carnauba wax typically gives off a deep, warm glow or shine. Polymer wax can be fine-tuned towards darkening, shine, and depth. They also tend to be a little easier to apply and remove. The newer SiO2 technology takes things to a new level with features like extreme water beading and self-cleaning because of the tension on the surface of the paint.

There are a variety of tools out there to protect paint in different ways, different longevities and different appearances. Paint coatings provide some of the best protection that currently exists. However, it doesn’t always make sense to use coatings, partially because it needs to be maintained properly and partially because coatings are much more expensive than other forms of paint protection. Value and budges for a customer can certainly vary. This is one of the reasons Meguiar’s created Hybrid Ceramic Technology, it gives customers many of the benefits of a true coating in a more cost-effective product.

Some people like stacking or layering waxes. If you are going to use a carnauba wax and a synthetic wax or polymer wax what order to you apply them? Keep in mind that you don’t have to use two different types of wax protection since they are both designed to do the same thing, just in a slightly different way.

If layering different waxes, the order really depends on what is most important to you. Some will apply a synthetic wax or sealant on first for the durability factor and then topcoat with a carnauba to get more gloss and shine over. Alternatively, apply a carnauba first, followed by a synthetic to end up with more surface tension, water beading and to obtain more protection than what a carnauba can offer.

Bottom line is that there are a lot of different choices and you can mix and match as you see fit depending on wants and needs. Ask yourself questions like: What do you like? What’s important to you? How much time are you willing to put into it? There’s no right or wrong…go with what you like, and have fun doing it.
