Exploring the beautiful Bolton Abbey Estate
Exploring everything around the beautiful Bolton Abbey Estate with our Motorhome
The most Dangerous river in the world, two great bike rides and a superb hike. Three nights on the Bolton Abbey Estate. The main approach is through an infamous stone arch which is 2.8m wide. That was interesting! The site is right in the heart of the estate with great access to the hikes along the river and the famous but deadly Strid section of the river Wharfe. The site is remote, there are no pubs within staggering distance, no mobile or tv reception but paid wifi and tv points are available.
Day 1 Bike ride:
This would have been much better if it had not been raining, we didn’t get chance to go and see the rocks at Malham Cove because of the rain but we did find a lovely place to eat; the Secret Garden Bistro in Malham. The route has lots of hills so if you’re not on electric take strong legs! We powered though the last 4 miles which left be with just 2% battery.

Day 2 Bolton Abbey Estate Hike (Dogs not allowed) :
We started by walking upstream and then headed high up to Simons seat. The views over the valley are stunning. We then headed down through the valley of Desolation. It gets its name from a storm in 1826 that ripped through the valley bringing trees down and causing a landslide. There is no evidence of that today, the valley is truly stunning and the waterfall is picture perfect, be sure not to miss it. The valley leads back down to the river Wharfe and onto the Abbey and Stepping Stones. At the time we crossed there were 3-4 stones missing which made it quite tricky, there’s a bridge alternative. Then onto the Strid where the Wharfe flips on its side and goes from about 70 feet wide to 6ft wide but very deep. The are very strong undercurrents that will drag you down. Don’t be tempted to jump across, it is said that it has a 100% fatality in you fall in.

Day 3 Bike Ride
We headed off to Skipton, the section of the ride after leaving Skipton is great, there is a short tricky off road uphill section which takes you onto a ridge for several miles with great views. Then it’s down back into the Estate where we had coffee and cake at the Abbey Tea rooms. This is a must the cakes are amazing.
