Suspect dead, police officer hurt after officer-involved shooting in Asheville

A suspect who reportedly shot at police officers on the night of April 21 from a business in South Asheville is dead, according to the Asheville Police Department. #asheville #news

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation identified the deceased suspect as James Jones.

According to an April 22 news release from the Asheville Police Department, the suspect had fired at police officers through a glass door at a business at 1987 Hendersonville Road after officers responded to a report of a person with a gun at 9:45 p.m. on April 21.

Police said officers returned fire and struck the suspect. Once the scene was secured, the suspect was taken to Mission Hospital for treatment, where he died in the early-morning hours of April 22, the release said.

One officer received non-life-threatening injuries as a result of broken glass from the suspect’s gunfire.

Late Wednesday morning, News 13 crews saw boarded-up windows at Relax Spa, with glass on the ground. The property manager for the strip mall said Relax Spa’s owners are in California and that she is working to contact them.

Surveillance video from a neighboring business, Golden Goat Cannabis and Culture Shop, captured a series of gunshots Tuesday night, as well as Asheville police officers arriving at the scene.

Per the Asheville Police Department’s protocol, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation was contacted and is conducting the investigation.

The SBI said in a news release that its agents responded to the scene, where they began collecting evidence and initiating the investigation.

The SBI said its investigation is active and ongoing and that no additional details are available at this time.
