The History and Rebirth of Portuguese Jewry

Jews have lived in what is now #Portugal for more than 2,000 years. They have endured expulsion, religious persecution and numerous other forms of #antisemitism. But today, the Jews in Portugal are flourishing, from Lisbon to Oporto and beyond.

José Ribeiro e Castro, Portuguese Member of Parliament and president of the #Portuguese Historical Society, speaks with B'nai B'rith CEO Dan Mariaschin about the history and the inspiring rebirth of Portuguese Jewry.

Castro authored the crucial 2015 Law of Return statute that was approved unanimously by Portugal’s parliament, allowing descendants of Sephardic #Jews expelled from Portugal to acquire Portuguese nationality.

He is an advocate for Portugal’s Jewish community, dedicated to fully correcting a historic injustice. A lawyer and journalist by background, he has spent more than 40 years in politics, including 10 years as Member of the European Parliament from 1999 to 2009.
