Weaning Time

When it comes time to wean your youngster there are many decisions to be made. Including what type of weaning you are going to do. The two types of weaning are:

Gradual - Where you begin separating your mare and foal (often at feeding time). Using a safe fence to keep them separated. You will do this for short periods each day and gradually increase the time over several days, until eventually, you don't put them back together.

Abrupt - Which is just like it sounds, and is where you separate the mare and foal completely, right at the decided weaning time. Although it may sound harsh, it can be the easiest on everyone, including the mare and foal.

Different factors may come into play when you are trying to decide which method to use, including your facilities and your horses themselves.
