I Visited the LARGEST SOVIET AVIATION MUSEUM in the World

The largest soviet aviation museum in the world in Russia is also the largest aviation museum in Europe. That's where I went a couple of days ago!

The Central Air Force Museum (Russian: Центральный музей Военно-воздушных сил РФ) is in the Moscow Region, an hour or so by train from Komsomolskij Square, where the Yaroslavskij Railway Station is located. Which is exactly where we start our video off today!

The name of the town where the museum is found at is Monino, with a population of 20,000 and not much stuff to do or see apart from the museum which attracts visitors from all over the world. It is one of the world's largest aviation museums, and the largest for Soviet aircrafts, with a collection including 173 aircraft and 127 aircraft engines on display.
The museum also features additional displays, including Cold War-era American espionage equipment, weapons, instruments, uniforms, artwork.

I visited it on a Sunday: please mind that the museum is CLOSED on Mondays and Tuesdays, and opening times are from 10 until 5. I left Moscow with the 12 o'clock train and reached Monino at around 1, but I had a bit of misfortune with the GPS and actually went the wrong way for quite a bit. The museums grounds were also quite difficult to find, so I had to resort to asking the locals for direction. Thankfully, they were incredibly helpful!

Prior to 1999, the museum was closed to the public, because of the display of classified prototypes from the era of the former Soviet Union. Today, the museum contains a range of aircraft, both domestic and foreign, including military, civil and special purpose. The museum also houses associated pieces, such as the uniforms, documents, models and equipment related to the aircraft. The museum is currently open to members of the public to visit.

It's a MUST if you're an aviation fan. And let's be real, if you're an aviation fan you are a fan of Soviet Aviation as well. The exhibit starts off with two internal hangars showcasing mostly aircrafts and engines from WW2 before moving to the outside, where for me the most fascinating pieces were. The largest helicopter ever built, the Mil V12, is stationed at Monino. As soon as you enter the grounds you'll see how absolutely massive it is: you'll be astonished at looking at one of the only two prototypes that were ever built.

Moving on, you can see the Russian Concorde, the Concordski, or, if referred to by his proper name, the Tupolev-144, the Tu144. The first supersonic jet ever! Reaching speeds of over 2500 km/h, it made its first flight on the 31st of December 1968. That is three months before the first flight of the British-French Concorde! However, it suffered a similar fate to its western counterpart: indeed, a couple of accidents, such as the glamorous crash at the 1973 Paris airshow, led to his early demise.

Overall, the visit was well worth it. I then walked back to the station (but you can of course take a taxi or a bus) and got on the 5:53 train back to Moscow, which was absolutely PACKED because it was a Sunday night and most people were travelling from the provinces back to the big capital.

Some of the aircrafts on display include:

WHO AM I?
I started making videos for Youtube when I was a university student. I was always trying to find cheap getaways to do some traveling in spite of the adversities put in place by being a broke university student living on their own! Traveling became more and more a fundamental passion of mine, and now that I'm gradually moving on to make a job out of it I couldn't be happier, and I can only continue making this kind of videos both for mine and your enjoyment!

I also run an ONLINE SHOP with TRAVEL MERCHANDISE, feel free to check it out here 👉 https://bit.ly/2x1Zzjf
