Andy Warhol Screen Test: Helmut (1964–1966)
This screen test features Andy Warhol’s portrait of Helmut, filmed at the Factory in New York in 1966.
Warhol’s Screen Tests are a series of silent, black-and-white film portraits that capture their subjects in a single, continuous shot. Typically framed from the shoulders up against a plain background, each individual was asked to sit still for several minutes, often without blinking, while the camera recorded.
Originally shot on 16mm film and projected in slow motion, the Screen Tests transform simple observation into a new form of portraiture—somewhere between photography and film. The result is both intimate and performative, revealing subtle shifts in expression, presence, and self-awareness.
Produced spontaneously at the Factory, these portraits include artists, musicians, actors, and cultural figures from Warhol’s circle, offering a direct glimpse into the people and atmosphere that defined the 1960s downtown New York art scene.
