ON TRAGEDY: Aristotle, Job, Ophelia

Welcome back to Critic.Reading.Writing. In this first full episode, I will be exploring the concept of tragedy and its relationship to grief and grieving using Aristotle's The Nicomachean Ethics and the stories of the biblical Job and of Ophelia in Shakespeare's Hamlet. At issue will be the ways in which grief is a composite of different emotions and how literary tragedy helps us express our sense of self-disintegration when we encounter different forms of misfortune and catastrophe.
