The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) recently held a meeting with a delegation from the Communist Party of China (CPC) in New Delhi. The Chinese delegation was led by a senior official from the CPC’s international department, and the Chinese ambassador to India was also present. The BJP described the interaction as part of normal inter-party dialogue aimed at improving communication and mutual understanding.

This meeting was notable because it was one of the first formal party-to-party engagements between the BJP and the CPC since the 2020 Galwan Valley clash, after which India–China relations became severely strained. According to the BJP, the talks were focused on exchanging views and keeping channels of communication open, rather than discussing specific diplomatic or military issues.

The CPC delegation also met leaders of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in a separate interaction. The RSS stated that this was a courtesy meeting requested by the Chinese side and that it did not involve policy discussions.

The meeting sparked political controversy in India. Opposition parties, especially the Congress, criticised the BJP for engaging with the Chinese Communist Party at a time when border tensions and trust deficits between India and China still exist. They accused the BJP of double standards, pointing out that the government often takes a tough public stand against China.

In response, the BJP defended the meeting, saying that dialogue does not mean compromise and that engagement is a common practice in international politics. The party argued that talking openly is better than avoiding communication altogether, and that such meetings should not be misinterpreted as a softening of India’s position on national security issues.
