Incidents in The Life of A Slave Girl

Inspired by Harriet Jacobs' classic slave narrative, this filmic collage delves into issues of miscegenation, colorism, sexual politics, feminism, rape and violence and the subsequent impact on American culture and law. The "Casta" images' practical purpose was for precise identity of those persons of mixed race in the Americas. However, the great 18th Century hispanic artist, Miguel Cabrera captures the pervading ambiguity of women (and men) caught in a social stratagem over which they exercise no legal or politic recourse. The engravings, printed abolitionist periodicals, depict African American slaves of all colors - the fruit of forced carnality.
