Post-Digital Rhetoric and the New Aesthetic with Justin Hodgson

Justin Hodgson is an Associate Professor of Digital Rhetoric in the Department of English at Indiana University Bloomington. He is also the Founding Editor of the Journal for Undergraduate Multimedia Projects (jumpplus.net), Director of IU’s Online First-Year Composition program, co-leader of IU’s Digital Gardener Faculty Fellows Initiative, a two-year fellow in IU’s Institute for Digital Arts and Humanities, and serves as an Adobe Digital Literacy Thought Leader. For more than 15 years Dr. Hodgson’s teaching and research has explored the intersections of rhetorical studies and emerging technologies, multimedia composition and digital creativity, play and game theory, and digital learning and digital pedagogy. His efforts as an educator have resulted in his being named the 2021 recipient of IU’s President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning Technology and a 2015 recipient of IU’s Trustees Teaching Award. He has published scholarship in both print and digital form, championing both critical and creative engagements–publishing in journals such as Kairos, Enculturation, Composition Studies, EDUCAUSE Quarterly, and Textshop Experiments. His book, Post-Digital Rhetoric and the New Aesthetic, was published as an open access monograph with Ohio State University Press. Dr. Hodgson also blogs with varying (in)frequency at justinhodgson.com and tweets with less consistency at @postdigitalJH.

In this talk, Dr. Hodgson situates digital ways of knowing, doing, making, and playing as being critical in the higher education landscape. Grounding these considerations in digital writing, he will offer compelling student examples and advocate for digitally inflected learning experiences across the curriculum. Dr. Hodgson will focus on the implications of integrating digital literacy / digital creativity into the curriculum, situating digital experiences as not only expected from “post-digital learners,” but as being essential to our ability to enable students to take on greater degrees of agency, equipping them to better translate their learning experiences for outward facing audiences, and empowering them to become thought leaders in a post-digital world.
