Illegal migrants that start new in their homeland

What if you are an illegal migrant that is deported and has to start a new life back home? Some of the illegal migrants do not even remember their homeland and have to start new in totally new surroundings. How is it for illegal migrants to experience deportation and how are illegal migrants living this new world they are deported to?

Nigeria is one of the five African countries that has been promised to receive billions in exchange for taking migrants back, so the country is getting ready to welcome the deported ones. We see the place where people from Nigeria are brought to when Europe is sending them back. In Lagos Dutch Journalist Bram Vermeulen looks for deportees and hears the story of their expulsion. And we see how they build their lives in Nigeria (again).

In the most densely populated city in Africa, in Lagos, we are overwhelmed by the chaos that still seems to have a system. Lagos is suffering and smiling, as Fela Kuti sang. Journalist Vermeulen is driving around by a Nigerian who tried to get out of this chaos and left for Amsterdam until he was deported. Every day, he longs back to his time in the Netherlands, that´s why he is into telling us his story.

In The Trek, Dutch Journalist Bram Vermeulen travels through Africa to get to know the key players in the migration debate. The Trek is a current and urgent travel series, close to the migrants in an attempt to understand more about the main debate topic of our time. It is about the migrants, and thus, also about ourselves.

While the debate over immigration rages African migrants are being massively deported and returned to their homeland in silence. Brussels pays the local governments millions for that. But what happens after deportation?
