Apakatjah - Sydney - May 25 2018

After seeing them support Midnight Oil in Alice Springs, I was eagerly awaiting Apakatjah's first(?) visit to Sydney. The promo material read:

"Emerging from the deserts of Central Australia is the unique sound of Apakatjah, combining intricate guitar work with ancient languages, stirring harmonies and traditional instruments.

Apakatjah are Dion Forrester and Jonathan Lindsay-Tjapaltjarri Hermawan who weave together a reflection of their blended cultures and wide musical influences from Aboriginal desert reggae like Tjupi Band, old school metal like Iron Maiden and guitar master, Tommy Emmanuel."

Being the guitar fiends that they are, the band dedicated their performance to Tommy Emmanuel's older brother, Phil who sadly passed away the day before.

Apakatjah performed at Campbelltown Arts Centre, while taking residence to write songs for the follow up to their highly acclaimed debut album "In Between". The title track is at (01:14).

Dion and Jonathan were joined on stage by Pirra's Jess Beck for an encore of Warumpi Band's "Blackfella/Whitefella" (09:36).
