Four Ingredients for K-12 Data Science | Emmanuel Schanzer | TEDxBoston

The race is on to get Data Science into K-12, but it must be done responsibly, sustainably, and equitably. The prevailing wisdom is that K-12 Data Science is a mix of math and statistics, but what about ethics, social responsibility, and domain knowledge? Emmanuel Schanzer challenges the current thinking about this effort, and describing a new approach that's taking off in schools nationwide. Dr. Emmanuel Schanzer spent several years as a program manager and developer before becoming a public high school teacher and middle school academic coach in Boston. He is the founder and co-director of Bootstrap, which he first designed as a curriculum for his own students. He has long been involved in connecting educators and technology, connecting parties at the Computer Science Teachers Association, Google, Microsoft, Facebook and at universities across the country. He holds degrees in computer science and curriculum development, and completed his doctoral studies at Harvard with a research focus on using programming to teach algebra. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
