TikTok Vs Instagram Reels: 7 Main Differences (Trump BANS TikTok?!)

Today US President Trump signed an executive order to BAN TikTok in the USA, that will come into effect in 45 days.

I wanted use this opportunity to compare TikTok with the new alternative, Instagram Reels, to see what the main difference between Reels Vs TikTok and see if people should move to Reels before Tik Tok is banned in the US.

I found 7 main differences which I go into detail on in this video including:
- Tik Tok Algorithm
- Types of content
- Duets and reactions
- Video and comment replies
- music and sound
- in app editing features
- length of content

Lets start by saying now that Instagram has added Reels, our timelines are suddenly flooded with all these extra videos. It does suddenly feel quite overwhelming as we already have daily instagram stories, IGTVs, Instagram live videos and of course our usual feed photos. It's a LOT of content to make, look at and digest!

In comparison, TikTok just does one thing and does it well - entertaining, short form video clips. And live videos but they're not too intrusive. 

Both Reels and Tik Tok allows users to film multi-clip videos using a timer feature within the app to create unique and creative video content. 
On Instagram, you can only upload one video at a time whereas on TikTok you can upload multiple videos at a time making it much easier to upload and edit multi-clip videos.

From what I can see so far, the Reels content on Instagram is very travel focused and pretty much none of the reels featured on the explore page are using the text feature which was quite a big feature on TikTok.

On TikTok the content is much more varied, with people talking to the camera, doing jokes, skits and dances, and also just sharing information and educational snippets. Instagram is just dreamy travel shots synced to music.

When it comes to picking your music, Instagram Reels actually has the upper hand as instead of just giving you a set 15 second clip, it lets you pick what 15 second section of the song to use by showing you the lyrics on screen. I love this feature! 

Next up is duets. One of the super fun features in TikTok is that you can duet with other users, with some people doing nothing but fun duets with large creators to build their following. Duets have also created some super cute TikTok couples and budding friendships and helps grow the community feel of TikTok.

You can also reply to a comment in video format, with the comment embedded inside of your video reply. This tikTok feature really helps build an interactive community with your followers and makes them feel involved in your videos. 

Instagram Reels does not have this feature but perhaps it will in the future.
