Scientists Think This Planet is Covered in an Ocean Thousands of Miles Deep 🌊🪐

LHS 1140 b might be a real "water world" - a planet covered in a global ocean thousands of miles deep. 🌊

The Facts:
📍 Distance: 40 light-years
🌍 Size: 1.7× Earth radius
⚖️ Mass: 6× Earth mass
⭐ Star: Red dwarf (M4.5V)
🌊 Water content: 10-20% of planet mass
🌡️ Habitable zone: YES
🔭 Discovery: 2017

Why It's a Water World:
The planet's density is too low to be pure rock. Scientists calculate it must have either:
- A global ocean up to 3,000 miles deep, OR
- A massive hydrogen/nitrogen atmosphere

For comparison:
- Earth's oceans: Average 2 miles deep
- LHS 1140 b: Possibly 3,000 miles deep
- Earth's water: 0.02% of mass
- LHS 1140 b: 10-20% of mass!

Recent Breakthrough:
James Webb Space Telescope detected possible nitrogen in its atmosphere - the first rocky exoplanet atmosphere detection ever!

If LHS 1140 b has:
✅ Deep oceans
✅ Nitrogen atmosphere
✅ Stable temperature
✅ Right chemistry

...it could harbor life in those vast underwater realms.

Think Europa or Enceladus (Saturn's moon) but planet-sized and in the habitable zone. 🤯

Scientists are now searching for:
🔬 Oxygen (would indicate photosynthesis)
🔬 Methane (possible biosignature)
🔬 Other atmospheric biomarkers

Results expected: 2025-2026
