Which is the best watercolor paper for beginners?

I tested 6 papers to find out which one was the best including Canson XL, a super cheap multimedia paper, and Arches, one of the most expensive watercolor papers around.

I was surprised by how little difference there was in quality - although there was some. So from this test, and also from 20 years of painting, I would say a 50:50 combination of a good multimedia paper that is suitable for watercolor painting, such as Canson XL, and a good watercolor paper such as Saunders & Waterford or Strathmore.

This test was not exhaustive, there are many other great quality papers such as Fabriano, that I didn't manage to test, and I recommend you buy different watercolor papers as a fun experiment of your own.
