Claude Code Mods Explained: What 2.1.287 Just Added

Claude Code mods explained. Version 2.1.287 added them, and the changelog line is short: "Added Claude Mods: plugins may now modify deeper behavior."

The Mods overview doc fills it in. A mod is a plugin made of JavaScript or TypeScript event handlers that run inside Claude Code. Settings hooks, skills, status lines and MCP servers work from outside it. A mod can draw an interface, redraw parts of Claude Code's own interface, or step into a tool call, for example holding it while it asks you a question.

The catch, from the same doc: mods are not sandboxed. A mod runs with your permissions. Read what one does before you install it.

Sources on screen: the claude-code CHANGELOG (lines 97-98) and code.claude.com/docs/en/plugins/mods/overview (lines 9, 17-21, 79), both saved 2026-10-03. This laptop runs 2.1.284, so nothing here is a capture of a mod running.
