How to Make Your Home Look More Expensive - More Splash than Cash

Would you like to make your home look more expensive without breaking the bank? I have 5 tips for getting that luxury look for less. I call it more splash then cash.

#1 on my list is Crown Molding. A space that lacks crown molding tends to look average. Especially in rooms that are boxy or don’t have much architectural detail. For very little money crown molding provides richness to the space. When picking the molding select a wide trim for more impact. In this case the wider the trim the more expensive the room can look.

#2 Throw Pillows are always a fabulous accessory for your couch, loveseat or chair. I say pile on the pillows. One pair on a couch looks skimpy - use two pairs, in contrasting patterns, colors, and textures. Also ignore using a bunch of small 12-18 inch pillows. Opt instead for larger 22 inch pillow cover and stuff them with 24 inch down blend insert. The bigger pillows will have a bigger impact.

#3 Upgrading hardware finishes in the kitchen and bathrooms. Most tract homes come with very standard generic hardware. Builders use these bulk items because they are more cost effective, but not always the best for a homeowner that wants a more custom look. Hardware is not that expensive to replace. You can find more unique options at a hardware store, specialty shop or a flea market.

#4 I have to say lighting is an area that many people over look. Lighting is another one of those builder’s standard accessories that typically lack character and style. Toss out nondescript chandeliers, pendant lights, bathroom lights and ceiling fans with a more unique designer look. Try scouting second hand stores, flea markets or Craigs list.

#5 Nothing says luxury like fresh flowers and plants. The beauty of flowers and plants is that they look wonderful everywhere. I know, I know not everyone can have fresh flowers all the time or maintain green plants. If you have fake flower arrangements and plants make sure they are current. If your faux plants are more than 5 years old they need to be retired. After five years they are dusty, faded and the style of the arrangement is dated.

Follow these tips and you can take your home from ordinary to extraordinary and you will see that luxury is in the details!
