-When they clean and preen themselves throughout the day they rub an oil gland (located above the tail) with their beak and rub it around their feathers thus preventing them from being saturated when getting in water. It also helps with maintaining feather condition.
-Only 2 of the 11 in our flock like being misted with water but during a molt, I spray them all irregardless. Its helps to loosen the sheath that covers new pinfeathers.
