Breaking Barriers in Healthcare: Makayla Mantla’s Journey from Shame to Strength

Meet Makayla Mantla, a proud Diné woman from Bechiko First Nation in Treaty 11 territory, who is breaking barriers in nursing and inspiring the next generation of Indigenous leaders. In this episode, host Natasha Delany of the Indigenous Speakers & Facilitators Bureau explores Makayla’s journey from growing up surrounded by poverty and self-doubt to becoming a fourth-year honours nursing student, motivational speaker, and advocate for inclusive healthcare.

Makayla has shared stages with Canada’s Chief Nursing Officer, spoken at national conferences, and inspired youth across the country. Her mission? To create safer healthcare spaces for Indigenous people and show youth they are capable of more than they’ve been told.
