Liberals say they hate ‘obstruction’ – do they mean ‘democracy’?
Canada is spending $200 million on a gravel pit, blaming Russia for Alberta's separatist movement, and shutting down parliamentary debate while calling opposition democracy an obstruction. Jim Csek and Iain Burns document all of it so you do not have to.
In this segment from The Really Big Show, Jim and Iain cover the Nova Scotia spaceport scandal in full. A six-person company of Liberal insiders is leasing land from the province of Nova Scotia for less than $20,000 a year and subleasing it to the federal government for $20 million a year. The federal government has refused to release the documents. The defence minister stood in the House and told Canadians that European nations are lining up to use the facility. Jim and Iain note that European nations have access to French Guiana, considered one of the best launch sites on earth, and are unlikely to be queuing up for a gravel parking lot in Nova Scotia.
They also cover the Russian interference narrative being deployed against Alberta's separatist movement now that it has collected enough signatures to trigger a referendum. The same playbook used against the Freedom Convoy is being run again. CBC, CTV, and the BBC have all run stories suggesting Russian and American actors are amplifying the movement. Jim and Iain point out that FINTRAC investigated Russian funding of the Freedom Convoy and found zero. They also point out that Russia has a long documented history of funding left-wing activist groups, environmental organizations, and racial grievance movements in Western democracies, none of which receives the same media scrutiny. And they ask the obvious question: will the same Russian interference framing be applied to Quebec's separatist movement when its provincial election comes around? They think they already know the answer.
Then there is Steve McKinnon defending the closure of parliamentary debate by calling opposition speaking time an obstructive tool. Jim and Iain note that another word for speaking in a democracy is democracy. McKinnon's response when a reporter said they had not seen any obstruction: yes there were signs of that. End of conversation.
Finally Jim and Iain cover Mark Miller's defence of Bill C-18 and the Facebook news ban. Close to 100 media outlets have closed since the ban went into place. Miller's response was that allowing news back on Facebook would not revolutionize the media landscape. Jim and Iain point out that banning it certainly did.
If the government can spend $200 million on a gravel pit, blame Russia for democratic movements it dislikes, and shut down parliamentary debate while calling opposition speech obstruction, what check on power is actually left?
