Photoperiods: Vivarium Lighting Setup w/ Sunrise & Sunset - How Long to Leave Lights On For Reptiles

A frequently-asked question in reptile keeping is "how long should I leave my UVB light on for my bearded dragon?", and the most frequently-given answer is "for twelve hours per day"... but is this actually correct? Moreover, does this apply to other lamps like LEDs, or should each type be on for different amounts of time?
