Construction of the monument began in 1885 and was completed in 1935, designed by architect Giuseppe Sacconi. Built from brilliant white Brescian marble, the Vittoriano is anything but subtle—its massive scale and gleaming facade make it visible from many parts of the city. The structure features classical Greek and Roman elements: sweeping staircases, grand colonnades, Corinthian columns, and triumphal motifs—all meant to evoke the glory of Rome while celebrating Italy’s 19th-century unification.

At its center stands a colossal equestrian statue of Victor Emmanuel II, cast in bronze and weighing over 50 tons. The base of the statue is surrounded by intricate allegorical sculptures representing the regions of Italy—each one distinct, reflecting the diversity of the newly unified country.
