Beaches, Blood, and Bandidos??! RV Mexico Adventures
An above-average travel day as we RV across Mexico. This week we move quickly East towards the Yucatan, but not before a stop at our first Mexican beach (with cold beers and tasty ceviche), inevitable travel day high jinks, and meeting our first toll road protestors!
It was time to hit the road again, and leave the comfy confines of Las Americas Trailer Park in Cholula. These next few travel days would take us from Puebla (near Mexico City) all the way over to the Yucatan peninsula for what we hoped was much needed beach time and cenotes (beautiful sink holes or cave pools found throughout the area). When you're taking a road less traveled, things rarely go to plan. Lucky for you, we're blazing a path for future travelers!
We chose to overnight in the fishing village of Anton Lizardo (near Veracruz), and were rewarded with delicious food, friendly locals, and very cheap RV camping on the beach. It was hot, but not a bad way to spend the night! Hat tip to the iOverlander app for this great inexpensive spot for a night.
As we found at the beach, there is a big difference in air temperature and humidity now that we weren't in the mountains anymore. Since we entered Mexico in February, almost all of our stops were thousands of feet above sea level, and pretty dry. The combination made for comfortable temperatures with just the windows open and fans going, but now it was time to really exercise our generators if the campground lacked suitable electricity. Fast fact: not a single campground we have stayed in so far in Mexico has 30 amp plugs available. 20 amps (or even 15amps) is the standard, and most without suitable grounds. Be cautious, get a voltage regulator and always test the outlet before plugging in. My advice is to think of electricity as a "nice to have" when traveling through Mexico, and feel comfortable dry camping at most stops.
We reached Villahermosa the following day, serving as the last major city for stocking up supplies and food in case Mexico would follow the US and begin stay-at-home orders. Check out some of our other Mexico Monday videos for more details on what life has been like since COVID-19 restrictions were enacted South of the border.
