Barbara Strozzi 1630s, History Brought To Life
► In this video, we use modern technology to restore and animate a historical painting of Barbara Strozzi, a renowned Italian baroque composer from the 17th century. The painting, by Bernardo Strozzi in the 1630s, shows her natural beauty and expression. We enhance the image quality and add facial animation to create a realistic and lively representation of Strozzi. We later also apply modern makeup to her face to see how she would look like by today's standards.
► Barbara Strozzi (6 August 1619 – 11 November 1677, aged 58) was an accomplished Italian composer and singer during the Baroque Period. During her lifetime, Strozzi published eight volumes of her own music, and had more secular music in print than any other famous composer of her day. Born in 1619 in Venice as Barbara Valle to a woman known as "La Greghetta," she was likely the daughter of Giulio Strozzi, a prominent poet and librettist. Her upbringing was in an intellectually vibrant environment, surrounded by literary and musical luminaries. Her musical talents emerged during her early adolescence, nurtured by lessons with composer and singer Francesco Cavalli. She gained recognition for her virtuosic singing and lute skills. Strozzi's personal life included a complex relationship with Venetian nobleman Giovanni Paolo Vidman, resulting in at least three, possibly four, children. Strozzi's professional accomplishments included publishing numerous secular vocal works and setting poetic texts that challenged gender norms. She is sometimes credited with the genesis of an entire musical genre - the Cantata. She died in Padua in 1677 at age 58, leaving behind a remarkable legacy in Baroque music.
