Helicopter Crash Almost Takes Off My Head

During a training exercise in South Korea in 2013, a CH-53 helicopter carrying 20 U.S. Marines has a hard landing. Dust kicked up from other nearby helicopters causes brownout and prevents the pilots from being able to see how close they are to the ground. The CH-53 lands hard, tips over, and tears itself apart. The tail end rips off from the body and rotors are thrown hundreds of feet away.

Nearby Marines rushed to retrieve anyone still inside. Many were thrown from the crash, and several others suffered broken bones. It was leaking fuel, caught fire, and went up in flames only a few minutes after.

Amazingly, no one died.

Having just been ferried in 30 minutes prior on the same bird and in the same formation, this took us completely by surprise. A junior Marine at the time, I am grateful that my platoon leadership had the foresight to keep some guys behind to watch the gear and weapons while the rescue was underway.

Using .25 speed at 1:18, you can see a propeller whip over our heads in the top right as rocks and debris are thrown our way. I am out of shot, not the one recording this video, and not the one without my helmet on.
