Merneptah was the fourth pharaoh of Egypt’s 19th Dynasty and the son of Ramesses II, one of the longest reigning rulers in Egyptian history. Despite ruling for only about a decade, Merneptah proved to be a capable and determined king.

His reign is most famous for military campaigns against Libyans and the Sea Peoples, whom he defeated in a major battle in the western Delta. These victories helped preserve Egypt’s stability during a period of growing regional chaos. Merneptah also conducted campaigns in Canaan, asserting Egyptian authority over rebellious territories.

Merneptah is especially significant for the Merneptah Stele, also known as the Israel Stele. This inscription contains the earliest known reference to “Israel” outside the Bible, describing it as a people rather than a kingdom. This makes Merneptah a crucial figure in both Egyptian and biblical history.

His mummy, discovered in the Valley of the Kings, shows signs of arthritis and aging, confirming that he ruled during his later years. Nevertheless, monuments and inscriptions emphasize his legitimacy, divine favor, and role as protector of Ma’at, the cosmic order of ancient Egypt.
