The Shelby Cobra That Sold for $13.75 Million Was Built in a California Garage for $75,000

Carroll Shelby assembled the first Cobra — CSX2000 — in January 1962 in a rented garage in Venice, California. The total component cost was approximately $75,000 — AC Cars supplied the chassis on credit, Ford supplied the V8 engine on credit. No money changed hands initially. Shelby drove CSX2000 personally to demonstrate it to journalists the following morning. The car weighed 1,900 pounds. The Ford V8 produced 260 horsepower. The power-to-weight ratio was unlike anything available in America at that price. CSX2000 — the very first Cobra ever built — was auctioned at the Scottsdale Barrett-Jackson sale in 2016. Final price — $13.75 million. The car built on credit in a rented garage for $75,000 sold for thirteen million dollars fifty-four years later. Carroll Shelby died in 2012 — four years before his first car became the most valuable American automobile ever sold at auction.
