1600 tourists rescued from Sikkim’s Lachung amid floods

In a massive rescue operation, more than 1600 stranded tourists—including 380 children—were safely evacuated from North Sikkim’s Lachung after heavy rains battered the region, damaging infrastructure and cutting off road access. Mangan District Collector Anant Jain led the coordinated multi-agency effort involving the Army, BRO, ITBP, and local stakeholders. Tourists have now been moved toward Gangtok via the Lachung-Chungthang-Phidang route. Efforts to restore connectivity to Lachen are underway, while search operations continue for nine missing persons whose vehicle plunged into the Teesta River on May 29.
