Spirit Airlines Shuts Down: Final Flight Lands After 34 Years

The final Spirit Airlines flight touched down just after midnight Saturday, bringing an end to 34 years of operations for the ultra-low-cost carrier.

Flight NK1833, traveling from Detroit to Dallas–Fort Worth, marked the airline’s last commercial journey as crews and aviation watchers tracked its arrival in real time. Air traffic control audio captured a somber sign-off between the pilots and the tower.

Spirit, which has had financial issues for years, said it was forced to shut down after failing to secure a rescue deal, despite presenting a restructuring plan to investors in March. The airline cited “recent material increases in oil prices” and mounting financial pressure, closing the chapter on a carrier that once accounted for about 5% of U.S. flights and helped drive down fares nationwide.
