this program runs entirely on the cpu. ie no gpu acceleration whatsoever. every calculation from terrain generation height map to 3d projection and pixel plotting happens on the main processor. this is both a limitation and a testament to efficient algorithm design. all rendering uses software pixel manipulation written directly to a cpu-managed frame buffer. this is essentially the same approach used by software 3d engines from the early 90s, before gpus became common.

the technical rendering of the height field generation combines multiple wave functions at different frequencies, calculating the mathematics into height values for a 2d array storage that the program maintains in memory as a full 3d world model and then projects on to the screen for display. about 150k to 400k pixels plotted per frame ( 9 mil to 24 mil per sec ) doing less calculations more intelligently rather than simply throwing more computing power at the issue.
