What is Selective Mutism?
This video describes the DSM diagnosis of Selective Mutism. Selective Mutism is characterized by an individual failing to speak in specific environments (e.g. at school) but speaking within normal limits in other environments (e.g. at home). This disorder mostly affects children who are of pre-school age. Sometimes these children will whisper or point instead of talking. Selective Mutism is often treated by counseling. Behavioral inventions (e.g. shaping, systematic desensitization) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy are popular treatments. Selective Mutism is often comorbid with other anxiety disorder such as Social Anxiety Disorder, Separation Anxiety Disorder, Agoraphobia, and Panic Disorder.
