Christine Gregoire BREAKS With Democrats: "We Have a Spending Problem"
A Democrat just said out loud what Olympia refuses to admit. Former Gov. Christine Gregoire told a room of business leaders that Washington doesn't have a revenue problem — it has a spending problem.
Gregoire, who served as governor from 2005 to 2013, made the remarks at the Association of Washington Business Spring Summit on May 6. She lit into her own party for jacking the estate tax from 20% — already tied for the highest in the country — to 35%, and for passing a new 9.9% income tax on earnings over $1 million. Her warning was blunt: the people being taxed aren't homeless. They're leaving. And when they go, so does the capital gains revenue, the philanthropy, and everything else Democrats are counting on to fill the hole they dug.
The budget went from $33 billion when she left office to $80 billion today. Democrats responded to that gap with more taxes, more rules, and more regulations — then act surprised when businesses flee and revenues miss projections. Starbucks already announced it's moving 2,000 corporate jobs to Nashville. The state's unemployment rate is now above the national average.
This story touches on Washington state budget, WA Democrats spending, Christine Gregoire AWB, millionaires tax Washington, estate tax Washington, income tax Washington state, Jason Rantz, Seattle Red, and the broader question of whether Olympia's majority has any idea what it's doing to this state's economy.
