The Missouri State Penitentiary is a historic landmark in Jefferson City, Missouri Decommissioned in 2004, it was the oldest continually operating prison west of the Mississippi River The prison operated for 168 years and was the site of numerous riots, escape attempts and executions ¹ ⁴ ² ³. The Missouri State Penitentiary was also known for its harsh conditions and brutal treatment of inmates, earning it the nickname "the bloodiest 47 acres in America" in 1967
