Was the foreign "Saint George" introduced to hide the British Saint George of the 1st century?

Was the Hungarian George that we are presented with today the original "St George"?
Or are the British historical records correct and there was an earlier 1st century British King by that name who was presented the red cross on white background coat-of-arms that England later became famous for?
Artivargus/Gwierydd appears to have been one of the world's first Christian Kings and may be a more suitable candidate to be a British "Saint George"!
