If you’re like most hockey fans, Tage Thompson might have fallen under your radar only a couple short years ago. While highly touted as a prospect, it was understood that it would likely take a few years before he grew accustomed to his large frame and was able to make use of it. In his first season he scored 9 points, then 12. Injuries derailed his third season and he even spent time in the minors, before returning with 14 points in season four. In season five he broke out, potting 38 goals and scoring 68 points.
But the hulking forward from the hockey hotbed of Phoenix, Arizona, wasn’t finished. Because this season, he broke out again, scoring 47 goals and matching that mark in assists for a total of 94, cementing an entry into the game’s very elite. In many ways, his rise is most similar to that of a young Todd Bertuzzi, who came seemingly out of nowhere to become the best player in hockey for a spell.
Watching Thompson, it’s difficult to place any limits on what he can ultimately accomplish. He has a reach like no other, great speed, a shot that’s as lethal and accurate as any, and an incredibly soft and deceptive pair of hands.
The only thing missing in Thompson’s game is a bit more of a physical edge. He could use that frame to greater effect, as Todd Bertuzzi once did, to ‘gently’ pull and prod on opponents as he’s overtaking them. That doesn’t seem to be his game, though, and that’s alright. He’ll play longer and stay out of the penalty box, and might—just might—elevate his play to where he’s the most dominant forward in the game. It really could happen.
