One of the highlights of Istanbul is a visit to the Topkapi Palace, home to the Sultans of the Ottoman empire for almost 400 years.

This sprawling fortified palace sits on top of the hill in Sultanahmet and looks out over the Golden Horn, the entrance to the Bosphorous channel. Constructed by Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror between 1460 and 1478, it is a stunning piece of history and well worth spending a day there during a trip to Istanbul.
