Alligator Gar: Predator or Prey?

First ever television documentary about the alligator gar (Atractosteus spatula). This half-hour special debuted nationally on PBS stations as part of the "Exotic and Unusual Fishes" series in 1992 thru 1996. During the 1992 July sweeps, it was the highest rated program of the evening for several PBS affiliates. In January 1995, it was again the highest rated program of the evening.

The documentary focuses on the history, biology, and life history cycle of this amazing creature. Many researchers see gars as a link between the scientific research of today and what has evolved from a primitive past. Gars can breathe both air and water, which is one of the reasons they are still around today. Unfortunately, we cannot be as optimistic about their future.
