Exploring the Grain Fort Tunnels

Grain Fort was built to defend the Thames Estuary. It was built between 1861 and 1868. The main magazine was located beneath the keep with tunnels linking to the ammunition lift to the gun emplacements above.

The fort was operational through WW1 and WW2 and was abandoned in 1956. The keep and other surface buildings were demolished in the 1960’s and the area was in-filled with soil and rubble.
