3D Lost Places - Gruorn: The Abandoned Village in Germany

The former military training area in Münsingen (Germany) combines history with a cultural landscape like 100 years ago. This video takes you to the abandoned village of Gruorn, which invites you to explore the history of the former village.

In the mid-1930s it became known that the military training area established in 1895 was becoming too small due to the development of weapons and that an expansion was necessary. Since Gruorn was directly adjacent to the practice area, rumors quickly arose that the village might have to cede part of its district. The shocking certainty came on February 15, 1937: The village had to be completely evacuated within two years. Submissions and requests from residents and local politicians had no effect. The end of the village was decided.

In order to give the appearance of help and support, the Gruorners were offered around 600 commercial and agricultural businesses throughout southern Germany by the Reich Resettlement Society. Mayors from various cities and municipalities also tried to get the Gruorns. With a heavy heart and without any other choice, the 665 residents left their village by 1939.

After the evacuation of the village and the enlargement of the military training area, the houses were included in the military training operations. With the end of World War II, hope flared up again. The still intact houses were used to accommodate displaced persons. Some Gruorn families then returned to their old homeland. But already in the early 1950s the final end for Gruorn came. The buildings, in which generations of Gruorners had previously grown up, were damaged by maneuvers.

The houses fell into ruins and had to be blown up for security reasons in the late 1970s. Only the school house was preserved for military use. Today's landmark of the former village, the Stephanuskirche, was also left to decay.
