HEC Parametric Roll - Guidance and training

In the aftermath of a major incident which involved parametric roll in head seas, and following the IMO activities that this accident brought about, a number of ship owners and operator expressed the need to train their crew to understand and avoid all forms of large roll motion, including head sea parametric roll.

In response to this call, Herbert Engineering has taken advantage of the incident to produce a video purposely meant to improve the master's understanding of large ship motion.

The roll response of ships in waves is a complex phenomenon influenced by a large number of factors, including ship hull forms, appendages, steering, speed, direction, loading condition and, of course, wave height and period. Roll is particularly dangerous to ships for it can reach large values, jeopardizing the stability of the ship and endangering its crew and its cargo. Even when roll does not reach such extreme values, its effect on cargo accelerations can result in severe damage. In this video the reasons why large roll can occur in particular conditions are explored with the aim of suggesting to the master what can be done to limit it.
